Tuning into Change: The 5 Stages of Change with The Tomatis® Method

Bonjour from The Listening Lab of St. Louis! As a teacher’s aide emersed in elementary school energy, a Tomatis® practitioner, and a new learner of French fumbling with écoute (listening!), I see change spark every day. Lately, I’ve been reflecting on how the Tomatis® Method guides us through The 5 Stages of Change in 5 key phrases: Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Action and Reinforcement. Let’s tune in.

In the classroom, and during Tomatis® sessions, change isn’t random – it’s a rhythm. The Tomatis® Method, with its sound training magic, rewires how we listen and learn, which is why its perfect for people with autism, ADHD, or just a wiggly spirit. Here’s how it plays out:

1.      Awareness (Precontemplation): It starts with noticing – like a student realizing they are off beat with the rest of the class or a parent noticing a listening lag when the child is asked a question. They may not be aware that something is off, but you are. The Tomatis® Method uses specially filtered sounds and its proprietary Gating technology to wake up the ear and get the brain’s attention, sharpening focus where’s it’s fuzzy. I’ve seen eyes light up when ears are actually about to hear and listen correctly.

2.      Desire (Contemplation): Next, you want it – a spark happens and begins to grow. You are ready for the process of change to begin. Tomatis® jumpstarts that readiness with filtered sound waves delivered through the headphones through both air conduction and bone conduction. It’s not just noise or music – it’s a pull to connect. Clients feel it; they lean in.

3.      Knowledge(Determination): Then, you learn how – like figuring out a tough task. Tomatis® trains the brain to process sounds better, using bone conduction. (More on that soon!) and air. It’s science, not magic – though it feels like it when the focus kicks in and you can see they are ready to listen and learn.

4.      Activity (Action): Time to move – like jumping into a game. The intensive program starts and the sessions become a part of the routine. Then, The Tomatis® Effect kicks in – hours of listening and retraining the brain link. I put my headphones for each session knowing this too. And families supporting this process see struggles turn into wins.

5.      Reinforcement (Maintenance): Finally, it sticks – a new normal. Tomatis® locks it in with repetition. Consistent listening and audio vocal sessions builds steady ears and minds. Slowly and gradually, home life for everyone changes and evolves. There’s less screen time, fewer upsets, grades improve. Goals made at the beginning of the journey are met. Lives are transformed.

I’ve watch and experienced chaos fade to calm, step by step.

Listening sessions are relaxing, enjoyable and fun, not just another task or chore to add to the day…..

As your personal trainer for the ears and brain, I love seeing how The Tomatis® Method sparks a shift in behavior and overall well being in both children and adults. It really is a ripple effect for the whole family – and classroom. Want to tune in and tap into your own ability to change? Visit The Listening Lab and book a free chat with me.
